The Senior Management of the RFU Francis Baron (Chief Executive), Martin Thomas (Chairman of the Management Board), Andrew Scoular (Community Rugby Director) and Rob Udwin (Community Game Board Chairman) visited Sussex RFU over the  weekend to have a firsthand look at just how healthy rugby is in the County.  The visit started  with  a successful question and answer session at Seaford RFC where 70 Club members from the 33 Sussex Clubs attended.  This allowed the Sussex rugby community to put questions directly the men who run the English game.

“I'm certain that they have taken back a good image of the state of rugby on the in Sussex and of the ability of Sussex RFU to represent the clubs both to the RFU and to the clubs themselves. Diversification of the finances under Francis Baron will be his legacy to the game and for his successor to build on.”  said Graham Thompson (Sussex RFU Representative).

The visiting RFU personnel were hosted to lunch at Lewes and Holbrook RFC’s and then watched four matches at Lewes, Plumpton, Holbrook and Horsham RFC’s. On Sunday they watched the  Sussex  U14 and U16 League Cup Finals at Seaford . Both matches were of a good standard with two highly competitive games with Chichester winning both finals beating Brighton 17-15 in the U14 Final and Worthing 16-3 in the U16 Final.

The Sussex RFU President (Roger Edmondson) commented: “Many topics were discussed over the weekend ranging from overplaying, the League Structure at both Senior and Junior Levels, the increasing number of injuries in the game, the development of the game in Clubs and Schools and the length of the season.  England are hosting the Ladies World Cup in 2010 and England hosting the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2015 and this will give a great opportunity for the Clubs to involve more and more players in the Sport. The 2016 Olympics will include Sevens Rugby and this is going to give all clubs a challenge with the alternative forms of the game. “

“Rugby was shown to be very healthy in Sussex and the volunteers at each and every level important to the delivery of the game to all ages from 7 to 77 (Minis, Juniors(Schools & Clubs),  Seniors, Vets,  and  Women and Girls.  Volunteers make it work within the clubs and that was shown in practical terms to be of a high standard in Sussex. The RFU representatives return to Twickenham pleased with what they saw and heard. Players, Officials and Volunteers took the opportunity to talk to them and express their opinions on a very wide range of issues throughout the weekend.” Said Peter Silk (Sussex CB Secretary)

The President of Sussex thanked all the volunteers in all the Clubs for all the hard work done and the time spent week after week in providing all the Sussex people the opportunity to play the game by providing them the structure to have the appropriate games for players of different abilities.
