About Sussex RFUThe City of Brighton and Hove, is the home of one of the oldest Rugby clubs in the world, Brighton Football Club (RFU) - because they started playing in 1868, before the Football Association (Soccer) was founded, they retain the title "Football Club" in their name. Several other Sussex Clubs were also in existence in the 1880's and Brighton, Worthing and Hastings formed the Sussex Rugby Football Union in 1883. Our most recent members - Horley RFC and 1066 Conquerors RFC joined in 2008. The ancient County of Sussex was later divided into the administrative areas of West Sussex, East Sussex and the City of Brighton & Hove. |
| Sussex RFU are a 'Constituent Body' (known as a 'CB') of the Rugby Football Union, the ruling authority of the game of Rugby Union in England, who devolve to us the responsibility of being the governing body of all Rugby Union played in the ancient County of Sussex. Sussex RFU covers the administrative areas of East and West Sussex, and the City of Brighton and Hove, within the ancient County of Sussex which runs for 90 miles (144 kms) along the South coast of England. |
